Night Shift Weight Loss: How Ken Lost 30 Pounds in 16 Weeks

Ken lost about 30 pounds in 16 weeks while working night shifts through Kettlebell KUTS. His plan combined four weekly kettlebell workouts, nutrition coaching, and weekly check-ins. He completed every scheduled training session.

He didn't get a quieter season of life. He still had overnight shifts, family trips, a college move, and weekends when nothing went according to plan.

What changed was having a system that fit his schedule.

Here's how we built his plan, what his results looked like, and what you can take from his experience.

Ken's Starting Point: 239.5 Pounds and a Rotating Sleep Schedule

Ken came into Kettlebell KUTS, our 16-week online coaching program, at 239.5 pounds. He works nights and switches back to a daytime schedule each week.

His first week of tracking showed where we needed to start:

  • Daily calories ranged from 1,262 to 2,944.
  • Protein intake varied from day to day.
  • Sleep averaged 6.5 hours, with some nights at four hours.
  • Water intake averaged about 81 ounces a day.

These were his starting numbers, not targets we'd set for him.

He wasn't lazy. He was busy and running without a consistent plan. That's familiar to a lot of the guys I coach.

A Kettlebell Workout Schedule Built Around His Night Shifts

The first thing we did was look at his schedule honestly. Wednesday was his hardest day because he was transitioning off nights. So we didn't schedule training on Wednesday.

Instead, his week looked like this:

  • Monday: Follow-along kettlebell workout.
  • Tuesday: Follow-along kettlebell workout.
  • Wednesday: No scheduled training.
  • Thursday: Follow-along kettlebell workout.
  • Friday: Follow-along kettlebell workout.
  • Saturday and Sunday: Active Days with 30 to 60 minutes of movement he enjoyed.

For Ken, those Active Days became hiking and mountain biking. They weren't extra kettlebell workouts.

Four training sessions. Two active days. A schedule that accounted for his toughest day.

The point wasn't to cram more into his week. It was to give each session a place where he could consistently follow through.

Nutrition Coaching: Calories and Protein First

We didn't hand Ken a complicated macro breakdown on Day 1 and hope he'd figure it out.

He started by focusing on two numbers: total calories and protein. Once he had practiced those consistently for five weeks, we introduced full macro targets in Week 6.

As he moved through the program, we adjusted his targets. Protein increased. Carbohydrates and total calories came down a bit.

Small changes, made in stages. Each step built on habits he'd already practiced.

Ken also created a routine for drinking water: 16 ounces when he woke up, a 64-ounce jug through his day, and 20 ounces with his last meal. By Week 10, he reported averaging 115 ounces daily.

The useful takeaway is the routine he built. His specific intake numbers were part of his individual experience.

How He Stayed Consistent Through Travel and Family Commitments

Ken's 16 weeks included:

  • A vacation and a three-hour drive to Oklahoma.
  • Fence work and yard work in the Texas heat.
  • Moving his son into college in San Antonio: a nine-hour round trip that got him home at 2:30 a.m.
  • A second, unplanned San Antonio trip.
  • His aunt's 75th birthday party.
  • An anniversary dinner.
  • A weekend helping his mother-in-law move to Arkansas.

His training session completion over those 16 weeks? 100%.

He also started making more deliberate food choices. On the Oklahoma drive, where he'd normally grab candy and soda, he chose sunflower seeds and water.

When he didn't know exactly how a home-cooked meal was prepared, he made a tracking estimate and planned the rest of his day around it.

He was learning how to make decisions when the situation wasn't perfectly controlled. That's a skill he could keep using after the program.

The Mindset Behind 16 Weeks of Completed Workouts

Our weekly check-ins covered more than body weight and food logs. We talked about what happened when Ken wanted to put a session off.

In Week 6, he wrote:

"My mind tells me I should reschedule for later and rest. The truth is moving a planned workout later in the day almost never works for me."

By Week 11, he'd found a practical way to approach sessions when he wasn't feeling at his best:

"Every session is not going to be a PR. Sometimes I just need to get it in."

When I asked about the defining moment of his 16 weeks, he didn't name a milestone on the scale:

"Not sure if there was one moment, but each time I pushed through when I did not feel like it."

He learned which habits helped him follow through. That was a major part of his progress.

Ken's Kettlebell Weight Loss Results After 16 Weeks

Ken before and after his 16-week Kettlebell KUTS program
Ken lost about 30 pounds and completed every scheduled training session during his 16-week program.

Here's what changed:

  • Weight: About 30 pounds lost from a starting weight of 239.5 pounds.
  • Consistency: 100% completion of his scheduled training sessions.
  • Kettlebell strength: Progressed from heavy work with a 16 kg kettlebell to using a 20 kg kettlebell for more than half his training.
  • Deadlift: Used a 32 kg kettlebell by Week 7.
  • Nutrition: Moved from large daily calorie swings to more consistent intake.
  • Daily life: Reported faster recovery, more energy, and better movement.

In Ken's words: "I move a lot better."

He also chose to continue coaching for another four months, with a goal of losing the next 25 pounds.

"I have come a long way, but I still have a ways to go."

What You Can Learn From Ken's Night Shift Weight Loss Story

The most useful parts of Ken's experience are the decisions behind his consistency:

  1. Account for your hardest day. We left Wednesday free of scheduled training because his shift transition made that day difficult.
  2. Start with manageable nutrition habits. Ken focused on calories and protein before adding more detail.
  3. Give workouts a reliable place in your week. He learned that moving a session to later in the day often didn't work for him.
  4. Review what actually happened. Weekly check-ins helped us see the obstacles and adjust the plan.

Ken's story shows what he achieved with a plan built around his circumstances. Your schedule, starting point, and progress may look different.
